Being from the north myself (born a Geordie and raised in south Durham) I do have a soft spot for northern cities. So in spite of the freezing cold of my January visit I was well disposed towards Manchester. It did not disappoint. It has both architectural grandeur, the John Rylands library is a real gem, but it also has a certain quirkiness. I can imagine that it is a great place to live (provided you can deal with the wet).
