Apparently there isn't a right angle in the building - a kind of angular Gaudi construction for our time. I loved every inch of the
Hepworth: both the building and the collection.
Barbara Hepworth was a tour de force and this comes across in the museum. It has many finished pieces but also a large collection of maquettes and plaster models. Barbara Hepworth liked the softness of plaster which allowed her to shape it over armatures or to carve into it.
There are sinuous curves, criss crossing wires, holes you can look through, and holes you can't. The work has such a strong physical presence: bold, simple and serene. The building has these same qualities.
The reason for my visit was that I had been invited to take photographs and create a range of bespoke jewellery for the museum shop. Having just started working with the images I took I feel no lack of inspiration. If anything the problem is the opposite - too many possible potential avenues!
It is a real treat to work with such a beautiful collection. Images will be pasted on my Facebook
fan page and possibly my web site in due course.
So if you are within striking distance of Wakefield at any time do call in. It's fabulous and it's free!
