Great exhibition representing the life work of a man who never stopped innovating, who gave his all to his art. There is a freedom and vibrancy in Mir’s paintings that I love. The very early paintings in the exhibition are playful and complex with neat and wonderful detail and reminded me of Chagall. In contrast the big tryptichs inspired by the American Abstract Expressionists are wild and bold – in one way unrestrained with a pot of black paint thrown at the canvas , and yet in another very restained, just the one pot!
Miro’s colour palette of primary colours is not one that usually appeals to me, but the arc of a single black line, the blocks of colour changing where patterns and lines cross over each other – it is indeed seductive.
